CP 288 vs. Werner Trailer
February 5, 2008

A Werner truck was having some difficulty getting into the Thiele Tannery -- beneath the 27th Street Viaduct, a/k/a "the marbleworks" -- and was fouling the crossing when CP train 288, led by CP 9666, rolled around the curve beneath the Canal Street bridges around 15:00.  While the train didn't hit the truck with much force -- only the engine and half of a car passed the crossing -- it was still enough to cause damage to the truck, slightly bend the pilot and plow on the locomotive as well as break the ditchlight, and clear the south crossing signal from its base!

Colorful, Unusual Leasers!

Canadian Pacific regularly leases locomotives from National Railway Equipment (NRE) as well as CIT Financial (CEFX/CITX).  These units come in a variety of paint schemes, making an already colorful railroad even more colorful!

A Colorful, Unusual Sunday on CP
May 6, 2007

A Sunday drive around the Menomonee Valley produced several pictures of colorful and unusual power on Canadian Pacific Railway, which included some foreign power.

Plenty of locomotives from other railroads, as well as leasing companies, run on Canadian Pacific rails, adding even more color to what is already a colorful and unusual railroad.

Canal Street
March 21, 2007

The spur that serves Buzzi Unicem (better known as Lonestar) and LaFarge (formerly St. Mary's Cement) sees regular traffic, but the train that switches the spur tends to be rather elusive.  So I was extremely excited to see non-automotive headlights shining at me as I traveled Canal Street on my way home!  This was only the second time I have seen an actual operating train on this line, the first can be found here.

While chasing the lease units (see above), I spotted CP 1433 coupled up to several covered hoppers in front of Buzzi Unicem.  I was not able to make it back to that end of Canal Street before the unit departed with its short train in tow, however, after the second NREX-led train had passed, I spotted it on the other end of Muskego Yard, with a few additional cars in tow.

Heading home, I came down Canal Street, and was surprised to see SOO "bandit" 1538 stopped in front of Buzzi Unicem.  I quickly turned around, parked the car, and set up the camera, only to have the engine start moving while the camera was taking the photo!  (First shot on Flickr^.)  Fortunately, I was able to get a couple more decent shots while the engine switched the former Lonestar plant.

Lake Patrol
March 29, 2007

I spotted MilwBeerNut leaving the Burnham Bridge area, flagged him down, and turned around to talk to him.  As we were talking, he spotted SOO 4450 shoving several cement covered hoppers east -- the Lake Patrol!  I was planning on just heading home and leaving MilwBeerNut to "digitally capture the train's soul" ;) , but decided I should give a little chase myself.  After getting a couple sub-par photos at 3rd St., I headed on down to Maple Street to catch the train coming caboose-first under the signal bridge... at which point, I'll let the pictures do the talking:

Menomonee Belt Job

The Menomonee Belt Line runs between CP's Harvester Yard and UP's Mitchell Yard, parallel to Miller Park Way.  The line was originally a joint Milwaukee Road-Chicago & North Western operation, but CP assumed full ownership after a line swap with Union Pacific several years ago.  While the line was once surrounded by rail-served industries, recent redevelopment has turned Miller Park Way into a retail corridor, and only three customers remain:  Harnischfeger, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and Froedtert Malt.

M&P Job
February 14, 2009

Canadian Pacific normally runs trains on the M&P Sub at night, so catching anything during the daylight is a rarity at best.  However, CP started running a Saturday morning G64 local in January to serve a gasoline-loading operation, giving area railfans an opportunity to catch trains on this scenic line.
