If you place a wager on whether a train will derail... is that considered off-track betting?

Does anyone know the reason for this "new" spur track in Middleton?

http://maps.google.com/?ll=43.094394,-89.527792&spn=0.00358,0.006866&t=h&vpsrc=0&z=17

I say "new" because using GoogleEarth, you can look back at older images of the area, and the track seems to have been installed between 2003 and 2005.

Any help would be great, thank you.

Ha! I was over there last week at the mall returning some things for my sister. I believe that track was installed as a headroom track to put the train in while it is switching the business park to keep the main clear, and to avoid blocking the crossing to the mall (which runs right through the middle of the old siding). Just long enough to stuff your train in the clear, then go switch the industries without gumming up the whole works.

I noticed it too a few weeks ago "airfanning" the PdC Sub on Google. Not being familiar with it's operation during it's rather brief ownership by the City of Middleton, I wondered if this siding had something to do with the passenger consist. But Matt's idea makes sense too.

You know I forgot all about that commuter train nonsense that Middleton tried, its right they built it for the station. I have heard the on the radio though use it as a headroom track for the industrial park when they turn a yard job out to Middleton to switch. But yes, it was for the depot track in the original plans.

Thanks for the responses. I also asked on the WSOR Yahoo list, and was told about the commuter trains. It makes sense that they would now use it as headroom for switching over there.

I am mapping the entire WSOR system via GoogleEarth, I just have the PDC line to go. Once done I'll be posting it here for those interested.

Thanks again.
