The Fuzzy World 3um

Well I need to make up my mind soon what i want to do since each day I am having trouble picking up the cops & EMS pages when i had no problem before. If I really felt like it i could lug my mag mount antenna for the car from my car to my room & back but I rather leave it in the trunk & use that for in the car only. Although my mag mount has been sketchy recently so maybe it needs a tune up. I might look out of radio shack as i could get something better. IIRC this ham store in Milwaukee has some type of antenna thats suppose to be good

Since we're on the topic, I figured i'd ask about my predicament. I've got a Uniden BC45XLT, and I would like to get a mag mount for it, however, the antenna is a threaded "screw in" type, not BNC or whatever like others, but this makes it darn near impossible to get a mag mount, since I need an adapter. Has anyone found or know of a threaded-to-BNC adapter by chance? I've done many a Google search and come up empty. Any help is appreciated.

I'd steer clear of that place - arrogant and condescending salespeople. You want a solid antenna for your car? Ask Ten96 (nicely ) if he's willing to help you.

Have you tried Allied Electronics and Newark Electronics? Both have websites, and are very reputable companies.

http://www.smileyantenna.com/ 161 Mhz is center frequency for most RR operations. If you tell them what you have - they will likely sell you the proper adapter so you can use a BNC-connector. Then also order their 5/8 slime duck for handheld "ears" outside the car. There are times when you just hafta walk - or bike - and the car roof (antenna plane) doesn't move well. Fuzzy and I have both had great improvement over standard duck reception.

The Smiley would work to an extent for me but if its tuned for RR then it wont pick up the Police/Law Enforcement band? or it will just not that good

Spencer, the antenna connector you speak of sounds like a TNC (it is like a BNC, but threaded instead of twist-lock.

As far as AES, I have learned if you know what you are looking for you won't have any problems...but if you inconvenience anyone at the counter, that is a different story. And yes, they do carry a premium price tag. I deal with HRO (Ham Radio Outlet), Universal Radio, and Digi-Key...if these places don't have what I want, I go to Bandt in J'ville, and if he ain't got it, ebay usually does.
