I've been accepted to Milwaukee Area Technical College's TV and Video Production program, and start classes in late August. I'm just now starting to research apartments in the Milwaukee area, and I've found a few possibilities.

My price range is fairly low (in the $500-$600/month range) and I'm looking at either finding a 1 bedroom at that rate, or a 2-bedroom at an $800-$1000 range and looking for a roommate.

I was wondering if any of you have experience renting in Milwaukee, and any recommendations?

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Which campus(es) will you be at?

If the building I used to live in had any openings, I would definitely point you in that direction. Rent is right in your price range for a 1BR, but for 2BR! Alternately, I did notice a place on 13th Street (a block over) that I had looked at several years ago, that IIRC was also in the same range. That 'hood is closest to the Oak Creek campus, but the 'Stallis and Downtown campuses aren't particularly inconvenient.

Another option would be Cudahy, I even know somebody that has a place for rent. (Dunno what his prices are, but I would imagine they are comparable.) Again, most convenient for the South campus, but probably even more convenient for Downtown with WIS-794/I-794. (Or the Oak Leaf Trail, if you want to bike.)

West Allis is also very good for renting, similar price ranges to the above.

I'd stay away from anything close to the Downtown campus, you're stuck with high rent on the east side (UWM high demand) and downtown ('cuz it's downtown), and questionable neighborhoods to the south and west. (Further south and further west tend to be considerably less questionable.)

Well, I had my first orientation/registration session today. My classes will be at the Downtown campus.

BTW, I did find out that there is an opening in my old building! 4421 S. 14th St. (53221), call 414-761-2630 to make your inquiries. (i.e., not sure what the going rent is these days, but it should fit your range pretty closely.)

It is right by one of the Interstate interchanges. How was the traffic noise?

NOT concerned about proximity to CP tracks. :D

It was practically un-noticeable, except when everything else was really REALLY quiet (i.e., at night); however, the construction on the adjacent interchange has the sound barriers down temporarily. Mom says it sounds like traffic is going through the back yard, though IMO she is exaggerating "a bit".

I assume you mean that you're not negatively concerned about it... :swg:

I've chosen an apartment and my application was accepted by the property owner. It's on N. Cambridge Avenue between Brady St. and North Ave. Lease signing is scheduled for Saturday.
