http://www.thecitypages.com of Wausau reported in November 2010 that the town of
Kronenwetter will get $440,000 toward a bike path on the railroad R-O-W from Kowalski Road to Maple Ridge Road. That's about a 3 mile stretch between
Mosinee and and Rothschild. It would end south of the
Weston power plant. It is along old highway 51 and the WC/CN tracks.
Also,
Wausau will be adding trails along the west side of the scenic Wisconsin River, northwest of the downtown. And they are investigating adding a structure to the side of the rail bridge between Barker Stewart Island and the EastBay area on the west side of the river. The RR has agreed to allow it, if it is funded. The former CNW and Milw Road ran on the island. People have been walking the bridges to cross the river. This could make it safer and without trespassing on the railroad bridges.
I haven't found a good website to explain what this nice city park island has. It had 3 rail bridges to it and two are still in use for a switch job, but probably not daily anymore. This site has a map showing it:
