If you place a wager on whether a train will derail... is that considered off-track betting?

I stopped reading after the first sentence for one main reason... Why do the crossings need to be improved at all? Through Tosa is a "horn free zone" correct, which means they have gates and lights, what more do they need? Busy intersections don't have gates that close to prevent traffic from running the red light, nor do they have barriers to prevent pedestrians from crossing when the light is red. Why don't they spend the money on teaching people to pay fricking attention at rail crossings instead of being nonchalant about rail crossings? What happend in this case was not that the crossing was unsafe, but a kid, (whom I presume was not well educated on rail crossing safety) was not paying attention and stepped infront of a train. If he would have walked infront of a car would they say the intersection is unsafe, and needs improvmants? Why don't "officials" blame the schools and themselves for not makeing rail crossing safety more important in the schools?

At the very least I hope the city pays for all the improvments and doesn't "ask" the railroad to fork over the cash.

Yeah, I started typing up a rant as to how dumb I think the 'evaluation' is, but I deleted it and let the article speak for itself.

I know but I just had to. I drove home from Tosa along the tracks on State St. and thought about how I was sure they would say the crossings are un safe, so it was in the chute ready to go when I saw your post. I am sure I'll catch falk but it had to be said.

Put 4 gates and sidewalk gates at each crossing, you have to spend money to make money! That simple!

"Why don't 'officials' blame the schools and themselves for not makeing rail crossing safety more important in the schools?"

I have wondered about this for some time, now that I am unable to work... wondering how some sort of Operation Lifesaver presentation can be developed that could be taken to area schools out of the hope of making children aware of the dangers around railroad tracks.

When I grew up there was a fellow I heard about who worked for the Southern Pacific who went around the southern California area telling school students about his experience as a student when he hopped a freight train with his brother only to see his life changed forever.

The train, which usually moved slow and which was the usual means of the two boys getting to school faster than walking, did not do as they had become accustomed to do and started gaining speed as they neared where they were to jump off. When they got close to their spot his brother jumped off and landed hard on the ground but when he went to jump he somehow got tangled in something and fell under the wheels of the car, loosing several limbs.

Espee employed him to go around to area schools and teach safety around trains. I wish that some sort of formal program could be developed for this very purpose today.

So many parents are ignorant of being safe around tracks and there is little that is mentioned about it in schools. Anyone having ideas on how to get such developed ought to get together so that they might be able to come up with a plan on how to do this. I know if it could be done I would be glad to do my part!!!

Contact Operation Lifesaver, see if they have any programs like that.

You could also try contacting the WSOR, I believe they do train people to be OS presenters. The WSOR site (http://www.wsorrailroad.com) has info and links under their "Safety" tab.

I'm pretty sure OLS does those presentations, but it would have to be requested by the school.

People gripe about trains blowing their horns near their homes. NEWSFLASH..........Don't live near a railroad track if you don't want to hear the train horns people. That's would be like living by an airport and wondering why plains are so loud.

My ideal solution would be to keep it a No Blow Zone,
From 9:00pm to 7:00am.
From 7:00am to 9:00pm,
Blow at ALL Crossings for Public Safety..
