I wonder if these heritage paint schemes confuse the general public? To the average Joe who doesn't know much about railroads, I could imagine they might not understand why railroads that no longer exist suddenly start popping-up all over again...

"Look at that! A 'Southern' locomotive! I knew I should've gotten stock in that company... looks like I still can!"

Wow- that Southern unit looks great, and talk about attention to detail- they even put the old computer checksum letter behind the roadnumber!

The bigger question is, is that the correct letter? :?:

As for the computer checksum letter- yes, "K" is the correct letter for the roadnumber 8099. Props to NS for doing the research to get that right. It was noted though that the lettering on the long hood was slightly out of alignment with the "SOU" being slightly higher than the "THERN"- but to me it's not enough to say that it ruins the locomotive.
As for heritage schemes "fooling" people- I think it is a good thing that railroads are honoring their heritage, as what I would hope is that when someone sees one of these locomotives and is curious about it, they go look up the railroad and learn more about the history of that road. To me it's no more confusing to the average person than a Norfolk Southern unit running on BNSF tracks in Texas or a Union Pacific unit showing up on NS tracks in Alabama. (Of course that doesn't even begin to mention the legions of units on shortlines running around with partially patched roadnames- ever seen the ex-SP Tunnel Motors on the TPW?)

Honoring history is wonderful....It's just a shame that BNSF won't do their own heritage fleet. I think they said so a few years back that they don't want to deal with the extra costs involved with special unique paint schemes

Misaligned "SOU"? I see it now. Hardly even noticeable. Those old CNWs with the logo offset forward on the cab stood out a LOT more

The Nickel Plate unit is all done, and once again, NS nailed it.

The Conrail heritage unit made its first trip to the Chicago area a few days ago, it's currently at East Chicago, IN and will likely lead a empty coal train back east down the NKP line from there. Also the NKP heritage unit is now making its first revenue runs. The Central of Georgia unit should be next out from Chattanooga, while the N&W should be next out from Altoona. Also, the Lehigh Valley and Pennsy units are at Altoona waiting to be painted, and the Interstate and original NS units are waiting for paint at Chattanooga.

Also in addition to that, the first SD70ACe heritage units should be coming out soon, as the standard horsehead ones in the order have been completed already. The heritage units will not be far behind, and should all be on the rails by the end of May if not sooner. Rumor has it the first ACe out will be the New York Central.

Could someone explain the computer checksum letter-on the Southern unit-to me. It sounds like each letter was assigned to a specific number series? Or did it vary according to locomotive type? Or perhaps did it have something to do with the maintenance base the locomotive was assigned to? Any light you could shed on this would be appreciated! :)

And I have to say those locomotives do look sharp. I think I like them even better than the UP's heritage fleet.

I'll say!

I also was told the ACEs are due out both this and next month. EMD is painting them in-house. Should be seeing a few soon!
