If you place a wager on whether a train will derail... is that considered off-track betting?

My wife and I plan on spending our 6th weddng anniversary in the Green Bay area next weekend (May 21st). Are there any 'must see' places to go in or around Green Bay? Together, we are the "depot hunters", so if you know of any depots or must see train related sites, post 'em up! Any 'must-see' non-train related locations or events are also appreciated. Note that neither of us are football fans, so no need to post-up Packer stuff

Some spots that I already have on our "todo list":

  • National Railroad Museum - Saturday is free admission day... w00t!
  • Titletown Brewing Company - Do they have brewery tours? I find it ironic that the brewery is in the CNW depot, making it the perfect place for my beer drinkin' wife and me to visit!
  • Bay Beach Amusement Park - I'm not a big fan of amusement park rides (they make me sick), but the park appears to have a mini Wisconsin Central train ;)
  • Milwaukee Road Depot - Is this depot now vacant? Seems like I keep reading it was occupied by the Chamber of Commerce until 2008, but no mention of what it might be used for now. It looks like a really nice depot and is still in great shape.

If you're a modeller you should go to Engine House Services. http://enginehouseservices.com/

Bay Beach Park still has their good old train ride. It started out with the equipment painted for Chicago and Northwestern, then Green Bay and Western and now Wisconsin Central. They have also just acquired and installed a 'Woodie' roller coaster. I don't know when it will be ready for public rides, though.

Enjoy!

The Zippin Pippin is actually slated to open Saturday. But I think along the way in in Little Chute & Kaukauna have their depots still standing. Wrightstown & De Pere may have something not sure however. The old GBW Norwood yard would be a place to check even though everything is gone & just houses stored cars along with the old Milwaukee Rd yard which is empty. If your willing to take a drive a hour north of GB on Hwy 41 to Marinette they have a depot there & across the river in Menominee MI. Oconto might have one as well but again I am not too sure. I don't think anything to the east of GB to Luxemburg has anything. Also about 20 miles West of GB in Seymour they have a GBW Depot with some type of display. About 15 miles south of GB Denmark has a small rail display. The ELS also runs north out of GB on the Old Milwaukee Road Tracks. I haven't explored this line & not sure what they have to offer.

Thanks, Brent. Looking at the maps of the Green Bay area, it looks like their are tracks all over the place. However, it seems like reality often has less tracks than Yahoo maps ;) Hopefully my wife and here expertise navigational skills will help fund us some of those remaining GBW depots.

If you bring bikes, you can check out a couple of trails on the former KGB&W and Ahnapee & Western rights-of-way. The former MILW r-o-w south of GB is also now a trail, and there are probably a couple to the west as well.

Yes parts of the Newton Blackmour Trail is open. From Oneidaish to Black Creek is about the best there is as the rest of the way between Black Creek & New London needs work done.

That's on the abandoned Green Bay and Western mainline, a pretty scenic trip out of the Duck Creek Valley. Also, the former CNW Green Bay-Wausau line is a popular state trail, it starts right where the Marinette line branches off of it just northwest of US 41/Velp Ave.
