If you place a wager on whether a train will derail... is that considered off-track betting?

Just curious, I know there's a Little Chute, and a Grand Chute; what are these "chutes" referring to?

Google is your friend.
Based on French-English translations, I would guess fall, as in waterfalls.

Makes sense. The Dutch immigrants add some unique culture to the area as well:

 Pretty cool though. FWIW, I'm ¼ Dutch... Not Catholic though, I don't think any of my Americanized ancestors were.

There's also a "Chute Pond" County Park. It has a small waterfall you can slide down. Great for camping.

'Grand Chute' is just a cheap township that surrounds most of the City of Appleton (think 'would now be part of Appleton if Wisconsin had a better state municipal annexation law') named after the pre-dam Fox River rapids in the downtown Appleton area whereas 'Little Chute' is an incorporated village that is next to a smaller pre-dam Fox River rapids area.

There are three dams in the central part of Appleton and a fairly large total vertical drop. Perfect for 19th century industrial development. There is one dam at Little Chute.
