If you place a wager on whether a train will derail... is that considered off-track betting?

I had to take a detour to church this morning because CN has Pioneer Road closed in Richfield to replace the crossing. So I headed south on Mayfield Road which crosses the WSOR tracks north of Richfield and noticed there are ribbon rails laying along the track to the East of Mayfield road. (Map)

  • Does anyone know where the new ribbon rail section is going to start, like perhaps Granville area?
  • Is the ribbon rail going to end at Mayfield Road for now or keeping going all the way to Slinger? I know WSOR has ribbon rail in Hartford, but I'm not sure if that ends in Slinger or ???
  • Will WSOR have to install crossbucks with flashing lights at the roads where there are currently just crossbucks (like at Mayfield Road)?
  • What speeds will WSOR be able to go once the rail is installed?

I'm excited to see the ribbon rail coming because I'm assuming they wouldn't be investing in tracks unless they plan on using them, so that means I can continue to enjoy both CN and WSOR traffic within a block of my house for the foreseeable future.

Can't answer your questions, but I'll add there are some nice piles of tie plates and a "turnout kit" on the ground at the Richfield siding.

Wow... they aren't going to *delete* that siding!?! Is it ever used? I thought that was just the house track for the long-since-gone Richfield depot.

I thought I remembered seeing a nice Milwaukee Road switchstand in Richfield... wonder if it'll be removed and if so, I wonder if WSOR would like to *donate* it to a local railfan

I believe they started from Slinger with the welded, and went as far as they could with what was left on the rail train. Eventually, it will reach all the way to North Milwaukee....

From the Wisconsin DOT web site:
Quote:
North Milwaukee to Slinger Road Crossings and Spur Track Switches Rehabilitation: The Wisconsin & Southern Railroad will receive a $1,000,000 grant to begin work on the North
Milwaukee to Slinger rail line. A local match of $250,000 will be provided by the East Wisconsin Counties Railroad Consortium and WSOR, for a total of $1,250,000. Work on this line will involve the renewal of switches and reconstruction of several road crossings. Additional work will be needed on this line as funds become available. Current estimates for the total cost to reconstruct the crossings and switches on this 24-mile segment are $2,200,000.

Since there is a WSOR "Inspection" train scheduled (see the EVENTS posting) from H'con to Richfield Wed 11-16 (digital sick day?)- that work should be completed by Trainfest weekend.
Wonder if WSOR will take up the SANTA TRAIN duties with Soo 1003 unavailable (if so, hopefully NOT Trainfest weekend). Image

Anyone know when WSOR is going to start laying down the new rail? I can't imagine the weather could be much better for doing hard work.

WSOR must be laying the new rail some where. On Sunday, the house track in Richfield was full of track laying equipment. When I went to take pictures of the equipment on Monday, most of it was gone. I'm not sure if they're working on the south end near Granville or north near Slinger?

I'm bummed that they did the work during the day while I was working here in Richfield. I may have to consider quitting my job so I can railfan more often

With this new welded rail, does this mean that WSOR has "high-speed rail" from Germantown to Slinger? :D

The welded rail has made its way past pilgrim rd. In Germantown. Does anyone know why they are building another set of tracks next to the Main St. Crossing? Putting the siding back in?
