If you place a wager on whether a train will derail... is that considered off-track betting?

Tonight in the Madison area there was a WSOR crew doing some switching using road channel 160.575. I was sitting by the yard and they didn't seem to be switching there. My scanner and mag mount antenna seem to have a range of about 10 miles. Are there any other places that are switching-intensive besides the tank farm in McFarland and the greenhouse in Middleton? I couldn't figure what job this train was.

Thanks,

Kevin

There's two industries out at Burke that often result is quite a lot of switching for the crews. Burke is on the Waterloo sub just to the east of the Walmart near where Stoughton Road and 30 cross. There's a Lycon Redi-mix plant and a scrap yard out there that both get regular rail service. That used to be an area that was switched in the morning, but that was a couple of years ago. Not sure what the operating pattern to Burke is now.

Other possibility is the Central Soya spur, the line that splits off at the MX and dead ends just north of the belt line. I don't know that that area is as switching intensive though, nor do I know if the WSOR goes out there all that often.
