Over the years, I've picked up a handful of HO scale Tyco cabooses for future use, and now that I'm thinking of putting one or two into regular service, I'd like to know if there was an actual prototype for these cabooses, or was it more of an amalgamation of several designs?

Looks like the same body style was also offered by Pemco, Aurora, AHM, and IHC.

I'm in the process of building a LaBelle wooden SOO caboose model and I wanted to know if the model is prototypical or not. Upon doing further research, there are about as many variations of SOO cabooses as there are variations of snow flakes :!: I eventually found-out that the caboose I'm assembling actually is very close to an actual prototype (from the late 1800's), but it is a specialty model and only available as a SOO caboose.

So I guess what I'm saying is that if there ever was an actual prototype for the Tyco cabooses you have, it may be difficult or impossible to find out. In addition, as you probably already know, model manufacturers often make a model that is somewhat generic so it can be used for many railroads just by changing the paint scheme... so it's highly unlikely that the cabooses you have would be prototypical w/o modification.

My 2 cents...

Yes, well sort of. CB&Q owned a few semi streamlined cabooses similar (but not exactly) like the Tyco one you mentioned. When the BN was formed in 1970, it inherited most of them.

Fuzzy,

I've wondered that myself.

Wabash had some cabs with a streamlined cupola, but the body was very close to the standard ATSF hack.

Bachmann produced a trainset model of the Q's streamlined cabooses (NE-12???) The body is good, but the underframe and trucks leave something to be desired.

I've got a few of those as well. DMRG 6306 and 6307 have been somewhat rebuilt with improved trucks and body-mounted Kadees. Others are reserved for future use.
