...or weathering my freight cars. I've started tonight thanks to some encouragement and a demonstration or two (you know who you are!) and have two cars in progress. One is a WP 50' boxcar and one is a CNW malt hopper. Eventually I will be updating this thread with before and after pictures of the cars.

I plan on using artist's chalks and some airbrushed washes to make the cars look older.

The 'before' shot of CNW 490047.

Looks pretty 'plasticy' to me.

A couple layers and treatments of chalk and 'dullcoat'. Not quite done with trucks, ends, and wheels but pretty cool I think.

Nothing special, just a regular run-of-the-mill Athearn boxcar.

This one saw some treatment with paints AND chalks. Plus I tried some treatments with the Dremel. Not sure I like the Dremel effects, but the rest I do.

Thoughts always welcome...(but be kinda nice/constructive if you don't like 'em, they're my first weathered cars!)...thanks!

Thanks folks. The next 2 cars are 'under the knife'. I'm doing another WP box and CNW hopper (ACF this time). We'll see how things go.

Next cars are 'done'...for now. I may add some graffiti (yes...I know. Me actually putting graffiti on something!  ) before I'm really happy.

Started the 3 BCIT centerbeams today and the CNW 50' boxcar. I also worked on the trucks & wheels for all the cars done so far and that I'm working on currently.

Three layers of paint are on the centerbeams and the first of two CNW boxcars (one yellow, one green). I have graffiti on two cars and maybe will get a chance to chalk and dullcoate 3-5 cars this week which means more pictures.

I'm not sure how I like the graffiti decal on the boxcar...especially the one side. Gotta hit a couple of art supply stores and see if I can find a paint marker (really, really fine tipped). Still trying to finish trucks/wheels. Maybe Thursday AM...meh...thoughts?

Gel pens are another way to make graffiti I read about many years ago in MR. If you could find a really fine tipped paint marker that would probably work better, but the gel pens are an option.

It's been interesting watching all the cars you've been weathering, Dan. I've yet to take the plunge and try weathering things myself, so it's interesting to see what techniques others are using and the results they get.

Thanks Noah. It's been interesting trying different techniques (airbrush, chalk, "etc") to see how things come out on my end too. One thing I think I will try for with some of the "next" cars is not making them 'over weathered'. Everything on the rails doesn't look like it's one step from the scrapyard...and it's easy to do too much.

I will even be doing an engine soon...maybe in a week or 10 days. I've been practicing on shells (best way to start IMO) and it's not going badly. I have to blame WSOR6604 for getting me started on this stuff...but it's fun!
